Analysis and Summary of Guardrail Column Installation

This mainly introduces the installation method of plug-in cylinder. In the previous article, I have explained in detail the installation methods for other columns.

The first step in installing the column is to use a driving method. In the pile driving method, the columns should be set strictly according to the position determined by the steel chisel. First place the homemade guide, then drive the column along the guide hole to ensure a vertical angle. The column should be driven into the soil to the design depth. If the column is opened too far, the column should not be pulled out for correction. After the foundation is compacted, it must be completely pulled out and driven again. The installation of columns should be consistent with the drawings. And coordinate with the road route.
If it is difficult to drive the column, drilling or excavation methods can be used to install the column. When installing columns using the drilling method, the columns should be backfilled with the same material as the roadbed after positioning, and compacted layer by layer to ensure that the compaction degree of the columns is not lower than that of the adjacent unit soil. When using excavation method, the backfill material should be compacted layer by layer with the same material, and the thickness of each layer should not exceed 15cm. The compactness of the backfill soil should not be less than that of the adjacent original soil. Piles in rocks should be backfilled and compacted with granular materials.



It is worth noting that if there are corners encountered during installation and the curvature is large, we will use a 2320mm adjustment plate for transition. If the curvature is small, we will have to use curved corrugated guardrail plates. We need to communicate with the manufacturer in advance.

Considering the impact of guardrail structure on landscape and driver's line of sight guidance, the verticality, position, and elevation of the columns should be checked immediately after installation. Measure the verticality of each line with a ruler, measure the position and spacing with a steel ruler, measure the deflection angle of curved sections with a theodolite, and measure the lateral distance between the centerline of the road and the column with a ruler. The elevation inspection is based on the inner side of the curb and the roadside, using self-made molds or level gauges to measure and inspect each one. The horizontal and vertical directions should form a smooth linear shape. During construction, attention should be paid to the installation of transition sections and end columns. Strictly control the position and height of the columns, and pay attention to the parabolic shape during construction.

It should also be noted that regardless of the method used to install the corrugated beam guardrail, the contractor should try to avoid damaging the road surface and buried pipeline facilities as much as possible. If any damage is caused, the contractor shall be responsible for repairing it. The cost shall be borne by the contractor.

After the installation of the column, there should be no obvious distortion, welding, or elongation, and the burrs at the ends should be clear. The column layout should be based on the control points on the highway, and the column spacing should be adjusted according to the measured distance. The installation of columns should be consistent with the drawings and alignment. The column must be firmly inserted into the soil, buried to a depth that meets the design requirements, and perpendicular to the ground.
